A wedding is a special celebration of love and commitment between two people. One way to make the event even more special and personal is with lovingly crafted, hand made items such as the ring bearer pillow, bridal garter, party favors and other decorative items. In this article, I will show you how to sew a beautiful heart-shaped wedding ring pillow. As a bonus, there is a band on the back of the pillow for slipping over the hand to make carrying the pillow easier.
1/4 yard opaque fabric. Suggested options are satin, brocade, shantung, or taffeta.
1 yard wide gathered lace (I used a three inch wide layered lace)
1/2 yard narrow satin ribbon (I used 1/8 inch ribbon)
Basic sewing supplies: iron/ironing board, scissors, pins, thread to match
Optional: surface embellishments such as: doily, ribbon roses, ribbon, etc.
Out of fabric, folded right sides together, cut two hearts using the included pattern (.pdf file) (or trace your own heart if you want a different size).
Cut a straight strip, 2 1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long
Starting on the side, pin lace to one heart, fabric right side up and with the finished edge of the lace on the inside.
Continue pinning and following the contours of the heart around, overlapping the ends by one inch. At the point of the heart, fold the lace over on itself to turn the corner (similar to how you fold a mitered corner).
Sew the lace to the heart using a 3/8 inch seam. When you sew around the top curves, frequently stop with the needle down and lift the presser foot to release pressure and turn the fabric slightly as you go. This will help you sew a nice, rounded curve. Also, as you sew around the point of the heart, make sure that the decorative part of the lace does not catch in the seam.
