Vampires on Television

Some would say that the Vampire phenomenon began with famous Dracula story told by Bram Stoker. However, most would probably contribute the recent outbreak in Vampire TV drama to the extremely popular book series turned movies: Twilight. Just a whisper of the name Edward and/or Jacob causes many young, female hearts to flutter. Along with Twilight, two television shows have also caught the eye of vampire lovers. Vampire Diaries and True Blood, although very different, keep viewers trapped on their couch cushions for the hour it is on. Many viewers are anxiously awaiting and counting down for the newest season of both shows to begin again.
Vampire Diaries, while mostly aimed at a younger adult audience, attracts people of all ages. Similar to Team Jacob/Edward, viewers have now begun to form Team Stephan/Damon. Stephan and Damon are two vampire brothers who have fallen in love with the same girl, Elena. Stephan, the sensitive, caring, romantic, differs greatly from the dark, dangerous, and brooding Damon. The love triangle in this show draws the viewer in and forces them to decide who they believe Elena should be with. At the end of season two, viewers were left in a shock. It is expected that season three will bring a shift within the love triangle. While the show may not be appropriate for younger viewers due to bloody, violent scenes, it is perfect for those who watch and enjoy the Twilight movies.
Although very different from Vampire Diaries, True Blood attracts similar viewers. Those who are into the darker, more dangerous vampire scene would love the relationship between Sookie, who is a human telepath, and Bill, a vampire. This show is intended for mature audiences as it has frequent bloody, sexual scenes. Although True Blood contains the theme of forbidden love as is in all vampire stories, it is more unrealistic compared to other vampire stories as it contains many other mystical plot lines within. Sookie and Bill face many trials within their relationship due to the mystical elements that interfere. Viewers are anxiously waiting to see what happens between them in season four.
Vampire Diaries and True Blood are only two examples of how the vampire phenomenon has been modernly mainstreamed into today’s television shows. It is yet to be discovered why this theme has become so popular. Is it because of the forbidden romance? Maybe the tension between characters is what has the viewers at the edge of their seats. For whatever reason, these shows have become a popular way for viewers to spend their time while waiting for the next Twilight movie to come out in theatres. If you are a viewer who enjoys a little dark romance from time to time, take a seat, relax, turn on the television, and immerse yourself in the world of forbidden love.
