Staring a New iPad App Project in Flash CS5.5

When building an iPad storybook application, we will work in stages starting with the animated screen that is displayed when the app opens. The first step is to start a new iOS app project in FlashR CS5.5.

Starting the Project in Flash

To start a new project, open Flash and choose AIR for iOS from the Create New list. By default, Flash will create a new document with width and height dimension for the iPhone. Because we will be designing for an iPadR app, our Document Settings will be 1024 px wide by 768 px high and 24 FPS. (If your animations aren't smooth at 24 FPS, you can increase it to 30.) We can change them in the Properties panel.

  1. Click the Publish Settings button to open the dialog box. At the top of this box is the Player drop-down list which is set to AIR for iOS. Just under this, give the Output file a name.

  2. Click the wrench icon next to AIR for iOS to open the AIR for iOS Settings dialog box.

  3. The name for your Output file should appear in the first box.

  4. Use the Browse button to set the location where you want to save your files.

  5. Give the app a name which probably will be the same as the Output file name.

  6. Set the Aspect ratio to Landscape or Portrait as needed.

  7. Set to Full Screen. This will let your app cover the small bar at the top of the mobile device.

  8. We won't be allowing the book to rotate when the mobile device is rotated. So uncheck the Auto Orientation.

  9. Set the rendering to GPU.

  10. Set the Device to iPad.

  11. Set the Resolution to High if the app is for Retina display, otherwise set to Standard.

  12. Click OK to go back to the Publish Settings dialog box and click OK again.

Now we need to change the stage dimensions to match what we have done.

  13. Go back to the Properties panel and change the default settings in the Properties section to the following.

    FPS - 24 to 30

    Width - 1024

    Height - 768

  14. Right now, this Flash project file is named Untitled-1. Let's save this file (File - Save As) with the same name that you used above.

IMPORTANT: These app development tutorials are written with the Flash novice in mind. You will need to optimize your app beyond what is covered in these tutorials before finalizing your app for the app store.
