Super Gals! revolves around the kogal ("gal") subculture in Japan. The main character is Kotobuki Ran (known as Ran Kotobuki in the English dub), and she is a self-proclaimed "world's greatest gal." Ran is a teenage girl who lives in Shibuya, and she's determined to live out the gal lifestyle for the rest of her life. Ran is a very strong-willed, athletic, and attractive girl. However, she is ditzy and absentminded when it comes to school; the only class she gets good grades in is P.E.
Her boyfriend is Tatsuki Kuroi, and he’s just as ditzy and dumb as she is. Their love life is complicated but strangely comedic, especially since Ran doesn't really care much for intimacy or romance; however, she does like her boyfriend.
But the story doesn't simply focus on Ran and her point of view. The series also consists of teenagers who live the same life as regular students and kogals in Japan. There's romance, troubles, drama, and insecurities.
Miyu Yamazaki is Ran's best friend, and she's also independent and headstrong. She was the leader of a street gang called the Resistance during middle school. One day, a rookie cop named Yamato Kotobuki (Ran's older brother) saved Miyu from a tough situation.
Yamato dedicated himself to helping Miyu through her problems, and Miyu fell in love with him. Because of this, Miyu left her life of crime behind and became a much more polite girl. However, she is still an incredible fighter and can show her mean streak if someone completely upsets her.
Aya Hoshino is one of the top students in Ran's class. She's shy, honest, and studious. As the series progresses, she develops a crush on Rei Otohata, the most popular boy at school who rides a motorcycle. Aya has a hard time confessing her feelings for him. Yuya Aso is Rei's best friend, and he develops a crush on Ran. Unfortunately for him, Ran is oblivious to his feelings.
When ADV Films released the first season of Super Gals!, they gave the series a rating of 15+. With the main characters being high school age, and going through issues that high school students grapple with, I would tend to agree with this rating. While some girls younger than 15 might find some enjoyment in the property, I'm not convinced that girls younger than 15 are entirely mature enough for this anime.
