The Lost by Caridad Pineiro

Hello, and welcome back! The closer we get to the end of this month, the more like fall it’s starting to look, which makes me extraordinarily happy. After the horrible, humid summer we’ve had here, I can’t wait for the first day of autumn, but I can at least see it on my calendar now, thank goodness. And I can count down the days, even though I hope it’s going to feel like fall way before that day actually gets here.

This time out, I have the latest from Caridad Pineiro, first in her “Sin Hunters” series, The Lost (Grand Central, purchased). Adam Bruno lives rather like a wealthy hermit, hiding his shapeshifting and energy creating abilities from those who believe he’d make a perfect weapon for their own purposes. Bobbie Carerra knows she’s never going to lead a normal life again, not after the injuries she sustained while still serving in the military. But she knows she’s lucky to be alive, as so many of the men she fought with are not. Still, she can’t help but think, ‘what if?’ Then she meets Adam, and he sees past the physical issues she still has to the woman she is inside. Their growing relationship threatens plans that other have for Adam, and Bobbie and Adam have to team up to outwit them and save themselves and any potential future they might have. Betrayal plays an enormous part in this intriguing story, creating a perfect backdrop to the complications that exist already just between this pair, deepening their own issues and conflict. Pineiro has developed a real knack for coming up with unique story ideas and really making them into the best they can be. This story is a terrific launch to the series, filled with plenty of intriguing characters whose issues will keep readers turning pages from start to finish, staying up way past their bedtimes to reach a very satisfying conclusion. Adam is yummy, and Bobbie is quite likable, the sort of woman many of us would love to know. Together, they’re irresistible. I like that Adam’s issues aren’t easily resolved, that he’s strong enough to deal with them and determined to keep his love. I’m borrowing four of Cupid’s five arrows for this one and really looking forward to next spring and the second installment of the series.

Until next time, happy reading!
