1801 - Congress officially elected Thomas Jefferson as the third President of the United States.

1819 - The Missouri Compromise was passed by Congress.

1864 - The H.L. Hunley sank the U.S.S. Housatonic during the Civil War. This was the first time that a submarine had sunk a military warship.

1867 - The first ship ever to sail through the Suez Canal made their trip today!

1904 - The renowned opera “Madame Butterfly” made its world debut in Milan.

1933 - Congress passed the Blaine Act which officially repealed Prohibition.

Margaret Truman author and daughter of President Harry S. Truman was born in 1924.

Aaron Montgomery Ward entrepreneur and founder of the department store Montgomery Ward was born in 1844.

Bonnie Wright who is probably best known as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies was born in 1991.

Geronimo the legendary leader of the Apaches passed away in 1909 at the age of 79.

Thelonious Monk renowned composer and jazz musician passed away in 1982 at the age of 64.

Lee Strasberg who appeared in “The Godfather II” passed away in 1982 at the age of 81.
