Redundant expressions can be found in books, in movies, in television shows, and in the everyday conversation of people. I know that I am guilty of using a lot of them in conversation and in writing, but I am really trying not to anymore. Old habits are so hard to break.

affirmative yes - When you give an affirmative response, you say 'yes' or you show support for something. When you answer 'yes', you answer affirmatively. There is no such thing as a negative yes.

aid and abet - This redundant phrase is used a lot by lawyers. Could they perhaps be paid by the word? Aid means to help or assist. Abet, which derives from a Norse word which means 'to cause to bite', also means to help or assist.

all-time record - Today, Jerry set an all-time record in the literary world by writing a full-length novel in only 6 hours. That would definitely be a record, especially if the novel became a best-seller, but look at the phrase 'all-time record'. A record is the very best achievement so far in a particular field or area. All-time compares this with all the other accomplishments in this particular field or area, but since a record is the best achievement so far in an area, is it necessary to say 'all-time record'?

alternative choice - When you are given an alternative, you are given a choice of two or more things to choose from.
Becky's desire of a night at the circus quickly changed when her parents presented her with the alternative choice of a weekend at the beach.

and etc. - Etc. means 'and so on'. And lets you know that something else could be added on to what is being said.

annual anniversary - An annual event takes place each year. An anniversary is the yearly celebration of a past event.

anonymous stranger If a person is a stranger, then you don't know him or her. If a person chooses to be anonymous, then you don't know his or her identity.

armed gunman - A gunman is a person armed with a gun, so why would you use armed to describe a gunman?

artificial prosthesis - A prosthesis is used to replace an arm, leg, foot, etc. that has been lost. Something that is arificial isn'real. There is no such thing as a prosthesis that has blood pumping though its veins. Even if there were, it still wouldn't be the original and would still be considered artificial.

as for example - The word 'as' implies that an example is about to be given, so either 'as' or 'for example' needs to be deleted.

at the present time - 'At present' means 'at this time', so if you say 'at the present time', you are simply saying the same thing twice.

ATM machine - ATM is the abbreviation for 'automatic teller machine'. When you say ATM machine, you are saying automatic teller machine machine. ATM says all that needs to be said.
