Excel Saga

Excel Saga is an anime series based on the manga series written and illustrated by Rikdo Koshi.

The secret organization of Across, which is led by Il Palazzo, believes that the world is corrupt. Il Palazzo is mostly a dark and serious character in the manga, but the anime lightens his tone a little. The two main officers of Across are Excel and Hyatt. Excel is a very exuberant and enthusiastic woman, but she lacks foresight and understanding. She also tends to speak rather quickly, and has a major crush on Il Palazzo. Hyatt is Excel's junior officer, who has a tendency to cough up large amounts of blood and dropping dead and suddenly coming back to life in quick succession.

Another character in the series is the Great Will of the Macrocosm. She appears as the galaxy with arms, and she has the power to reset or alter the storyline. In the first episode we also meet Pedro, a South American immigrant. He actually dies in the first episode, due to an accident caused by Excel; however, Pedro ends up wandering the Earth as a spirit, trying to return to his "sexy wife" and his son. Pedro will play an important role as the series continues, after he meets Nabeshin and works at becoming an "Afro-Warrior." There are a host of other characters who are introduced in the series, who add on to the comedy and "over the top" feel of the series.

Excel Saga is definitely a comedy series, and it employs a lot of exaggeration and running gags. The series also utilizes fanservice, especially when it comes to the character of Excel; the fanservice in the first episode primarily came from jiggling breasts. In the first episode, there were also some shots with blood in them, especially when Excel was being hit by trucks.

The animation employed in Excel Saga utilizes many of the tropes used in comedy anime to convey various emotions and situations. In addition, there are times when other forms of exaggerated animation are used to convey the humor in the series.

Between the humor and the fanservice employed in this series, it is definitely not being aimed at younger audiences. Since FUNimation has given the series a TV-MA rating, I can only recommend it to anime viewers who are 18 years of age and older.
