Keeping secrets is important for secret societies. That is supposed to be the sole purpose of the Priory of Sion. They are not trying to take over the world. They are said to exist solely to protect the secret of Jesus of Nazareth’s descendents. Needless to say, this makes the controversy of the group explosive.
Before jumping into the Priory of Sion and its history, one has to understand the Christian stance on Jesus Christ. He was the son of God who came to earth to save mankind through the sacrifice of his own body. He began his ministry at the age of 30 and was crucified by the Romans at the age of 33. Three days after his death, his body was missing from the sealed tomb and many witnesses came forth declaring him alive as they had seen him and even had eaten with him after his resurrection and before he ascended into heaven.
All religious texts show Jesus as a man dedicated to his ministry and living a celibate lifestyle. Yet, others have suggested that his relationship with Mary Magdalene, a woman who was possessed with seven demons that Jesus cured, was more than teacher and disciple. They claim they were married and had a child. To those that believe this, the Holy Grail which was the cup that Jesus drank out of at the Last Supper before his arrest and execution is in reality the child that Mary gave birth to.
There is no historical evidence of this. The closest historical documents concerning Jesus are the Christian religious texts, a few Jewish texts, and the material from the early Church fathers. None of these ever suggest Jesus in a relationship that was anything but teacher and disciple. Only the Gnostic Gospels write of Jesus in a physical relationship, but no other documents outside of the Gnostics mention this.
Knowing this, one is better able to see the problems with the society and why it was supposedly kept secret. Some accounts have the Priory of Sion being founded in 1099 in Jerusalem with the formal name of Prieure du Notre Dame de Sion. There is not much supporting evidence of this so to declare it fact might be a little premature.
The Priory of Sion did not become a name familiar to the public until 1956 when a man by the name of Pierre Plantard claims to have all the history of the order and a list of all Grand Masters. These included men such as Leonardo de Vinci who were famous and influential. It was only after historians and archeologists examined the documents that supposedly prove that the Priory of Sion existed since the Crusades to protect the descendants of Jesus and to keep the secret from reaching the Church and beyond.
Books such as The Da Vinci Code and The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail have helped give the Priory of Sion more attention and supposed proof of the existence of the order. To many, this is the greatest conspiracy of all: the cover up of the truth that could tear apart Christianity. Yet, all documents that have been presented to experts that are to support the claim of a marriage between Jesus and Mary have been proved false. Each one has been a hoax that rippled across the Christian world.
Does the Priory of Sion exist? There is no evidence that the Priory exists in the manner that many have tried to establish. There is no solid evidence of its secret life for the last thousand years. There are only false documents and lies that have been uncovered along with theory after theory as to the truth of the rumors.
This is one secret society that might just be the result of vivid imaginations to add mystery to a religious figure or an attempt to undermine a strong religion with thousands of years of history and influence. History shows that this one is a myth and will remain so until proof arises that cannot be proved a man-made hoax.
