Emerging Music

The Future of Our Artistic Generations

With the rising numbers of new musical talent, many have recommended that the local and national radios, music industries and artistic gatherings develop new ideas to encourage airplay and stage time for new talent.

A review of the regulatory framework for broadcasting services in Canada, which was conducted by Laurence Dunbar and Christian Leblanc, concluded that they pursue a “workable definition” of emerging artists and music that could be used for regulatory purposes.

"It is imperative that workable definitions of 'emerging music' and 'emerging artist' be developed" the review said. "The best way to establish such a definition is to have representatives of the Canadian radio broadcasting industry and of the Canadian music industry mutually agree on those definitions."

Music publishers and recording companies have been concerned that radio stations, television programs and concert halls have consistently promoted established home-grown artists but have not allotted air or stage time for the new acts.

Many hot new acts like Dawes, Lissie and The Civil Wars are popular live acts but receive little commercial radio play. The music industry can only hope that by defining "emerging artists" into the already-played sounds and genres and also making it part of general content regulations that new acts would then gain more fan-based attention.

Many websites now give artists the opportunity to take advantage of several different self-marketing approaches such as creative artist development and representation. They also have the option to upload their songs and videos to broadcast for potential fans to hear. Today, musicians need to not only have expertise in their artistic abilities but also have a keen business perspective on key issues that are sure to impact other artists, labels and fans.

Music has lately become a very significant function in making our livelihoods better. Why? It is a way we express our emotions. Music brings our inner-self to the surface. It can be happy or sad, it can connect with us, it can excite us, it can ignite passion and it can bring sorrow. For years and years it has been a foundation of entertainment to the vast majority of the population. For many, it brings to memory certain moods, brings back certain feelings, and mesmerizes the artistic mind.

The main objective is to bring new artists up from the basement to become the hit local talent before rising up to the platform of fame. We need to give our local music a new outlook and inspiration all together so they continue to entertain us for years and generations to come.
