This is my first review about a book that has been edited by me, so I am very well-acquainted with the story in A Gift for a Mouse. When I first read this book in its unedited form, I was impressed with how well the story was written and saw its potential. Ms. Graf is a very talented writer, so I really didn't have to edit what she had written very much.

A Gift for a Mouse, written by Rebecca Graf, is the story of part of the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of a young mouse. The book is meant for readers aged 8-12, but younger children would enjoy listening to the story if they aren't yet able to read it themselves. Older people should enjoy it, too.

Thomas is a young mouse who is having trouble going to sleep. What to do? He can hear his grandpa rocking in his rocking chair, so he does what just about any young child would do. He asks his grandpa to tell him a story, but not just any story. Thomas wants to hear one of the stories that Grandpa shares with the adults about the time when he was a young mouse.

His grandpa thinks about it for a moment, then agrees. He tells young Thomas, now snuggled up in his lap under a warm blanket, the story of the Last Supper. His grandpa was actually a witness to this momentous event in the life of Christ. He was an observor to this very first communion, the one where it is revealed that Christ's betrayer will be Judas. He also experiences just how kind Jesus can be. Christ notices the little mouse and sees to it that this tiny creature gets to partake of the feast as well by sharing the bread with him.

The events Thomas's grandpa saw affected him deeply and the young mouse wants to hear more about what happened, but is told that he will hear more of the story another night. It is time for little Thomas to go to sleep now.

This is a great book to be used in teaching your children about the life of Christ in a way that will entertain, yet make them think. The book is long enough to tell the story well, yet not so long that they will become bored and lose interest. It is a perfect bedtime story.
