One of the first steps you should take is to register with the Direct Marketing Association's Choice Program. The DMA is a trade organization that represents businesses and charities involved in marketing to consumers by mail, internet, phone, and television. Not every marketer is a member, but the DMA estimates that approximately 80% of companies that are involved in direct mailing are.
Created in 1971, the DMA's Mail Preference Service helps people control the types and amounts of advertising they receive through the mail. To start the process, register at DMAChoice.org. Once you're register you can begin to opt out of mailings from individual companies or an entire category of mail such as magazines or credit offers. Always remember that this service can only help you with members, so it will not eliminate 100% of your unwanted mail. Any company you already have a relationship with will have to be contacted separately.
If you take the necessary steps you should see a significant reduction in the amount of junk mail you receive. Remember every time you deal with a company or organization, you will likely end up on a mailing list that could possibly be shared or sold. At every opportunity you should review privacy and sharing policies and immediately take the necessary steps to opt-out of any mailings. By staying ahead of the game you should be able to keep your junk mail to a minimum.
