With a vintage 60’s sound, this soulful Welsh singer has been compared to the soul diva Dusty Springfield. Duffy has experienced significant success with her authentic and wonderfully-produced blues sound.
Born on June 23, 1984, Aimee Ann Duffy – or better known as her stage name Duffy – is a Welsh singer/songwriter from Bangor, Gwynedd who is said to be Universal Music’s most successful debut artist ever.
Duffy’s musical interest and talent began at an early age when she started singing at age six and carring a notebook around that she kept filled with scribbled lyrics. Duffy got her soul music inspiration from Whoopi Goldberg’s role in Sister Act, but she was later asked to leave her school choir because her voice was "too big" and she "didn't fit in."
Duffy was signed to UK’s A&M Records in 2007 and then released her debut album in December 2008 titled Rockferry, which hit number one on the UK Album Chart. It was also the best-selling album in the United Kingdom in 2008 with 1.68 million copies sold. Rockferry was certified Platinum several times and has since sold over six million copies worldwide. The major hit single on her album is “Mercy” and from that song Duffy has become the first Welsh woman to achieve number one on the UK Singles Chart since 1983. Other singles from Rockferry include “Stepping Stone” and “Warwick Avenue”.
In 2009, Duffy won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Rockferry and she was nominated for two other Grammys at the 51st Grammy Awards. Also in 2009, she won three Brit Awards including British Breakthrough, Best Female Solo and Best British Album.
Duffy completed recording her second album Endlessly which was released on November 29, 2010 after being written and recorded in both New York and London. Endlessly’s hit singles include “Well, Well, Well”, “My Boy”, “Endlessly”, “Don’t Forsake Me”, “Lovestruck” and “Breath Away”.
She is now contracted with A&M/Universal Records and there is talk of a third album in the process. You can learn more about Duffy or listen her music and watch her videos by visiting her personal website, MySpace page and YouTube video collection.
