Mike the Knight

If you have a preschooler, then Nick Jr. has a new show that I’m sure they’ll love! Mike the Knight is a new show airing on Nick featuring a lovable, adventurous knight- in- training learning how to be an excellent knight. He lives in the Kingdom of Glendragon, which is ruled by his father and mother, the king and queen.

Mike has a passion for helping others, and his personal mantra “Be a Knight, Do it Right!” is heard throughout the show. Because his father is off on a journey exploring far- away lands, Mike’s mother has asked him to help her keep the Kingdom safe. With this charge, Mike learns responsibility, and he learns the importance of doing things the right way.

While the central character is male, there is still a lot in the series that little girls will love! Mike’s sister Evie is featured in each episode as well. Evie is a wizard- in- training, and often helps Mike on his adventures by casting different spells. One of the spells she has cast has the unusual effect of changing what appears whenever Mike draws his sword; he never knows what will come out! Nevertheless, the object always proves useful in his task for that day, along with his shield and other medieval items.

Each episode begins and ends with a story told by Fernando the bard, and these funny stories ensure that each episode begins and ends with a chuckle. Mike’s best friends, a pair of dragons named Sparky and Squirt, and his trusty steed Galahad, also help him on his many adventures.

One thing I love about this series is that it is different! Most series that teach kids about history do so from an external perspective, by imparting information about how things were back then. This series uses immersion to teach about medieval history, and while that’s not the show’s primary purpose (it’s primarily designed to teach kids responsibility and doing things right), it does a great job of expanding their knowledge about the history of our world.

This series has enough action and adventure to keep my two year old son entertained for the whole episode (a feat that only Team Umizoomi and the Bubble Guppies have managed to achieve), and keep my four year daughter engaged as well. They love looking at the scenery, and learning about this “new world” with princesses and trolls and dragons, and castles.

This is definitely one you’ll want to catch with your preschoolers when you can- I’m sure it will become one of your favorites, too!
