How many gum drops can you eat on National Gum Drop Day? Can you put a smile on a grouchy face on Do a Grouch a Favor Day? What in the world are you supposed to celebrate on Cow Milked While Flying in an Airplane Day?
Read about the below holidays and pick one or more to use in your writing. Have fun learning about them, then have fun writing about them.
National Gum Drop Day is a day to celebrate the creation of gumdrops. This day was most likely created by a candy maker. Gummi candies, the most popular kind of gum drop today, use the same gelatin base as the original gum drop candies. How would you celebrate today? You eat all of the gum drops you want.
Remember the Maine Day - This isn't talking about the state of Maine, so what was the Maine and why should we remember it? The Maine was an American battleship. On February 15, 1898, it was blown up while docked at Havan Harbor in Spain. A formal declaration of war against Spain followed just over 2 months later.
Do a Grouch a Favor Day - Why in the world would you want to do a grouch a favor of any kind? To make hiim or her happy, of course. Then maybe the world would be a happier place. People are grouchy for all kinds of reasons. Maybe something bad is going on in his life. Maybe she didn't get enough sleep the night before. Maybe someone close to them is really, really sick. Whatever the reason, any grouch would like to be cheered up. Do something really nice for one today and see if you can make the world a better, happier place.
No one know how this day began, so put your writer's imagination to work and come up with a really fantastic reason, then write about it. Your character could be so set on doing random acts of kindness that his or her acts of kindness turn into something not so random or so kind.
Random Acts of Kindness Day - This is another day to do kind things for others. There are a lot of organizations and schools that teach about this day. This would be a great day to use in a story. Someone celebrating this day could get into all kinds of trouble. Have fun with it.
My Way Day is the day to do everything the way you want to do it. Well, make sure the way you want to do it is legal first, then do it your way! Do you want to sleep in late? Go for it. Do you want to skip doing the housework and just laze around all day? This is the day to do it. Do you want to go rob a bank? That isn't exactly legal, so I wouldn't advise doing that. But the character you created could decide to do things his way, no matter whether or not it was legal and no matter what the consequences would be.
National Battery Day is the day to celebrate the invention of the battery. Think about it. Batteries are used just about everywhere. A battery helps to start your car. Your laptop has a battery so it can run without being plugged in. And I'm sure you use batteries in your television and DVD player remote controls. You cell phone won't work for long at all unless its battery is good. Without batteries, life would be a lot different. A battery manufacturer is most likely the one who created this day, but it isn't known for sure.
To celebrate this day, why not write a story about what life would be like in 2012 if there were no such thing as batteries?
Cow Milked While Flying in an Airplane Day is definitely an unusual kind of holiday. On February 18, 1930 or 1931 (I found two different dates), Nellie Jay, a dairy cow, flew in an airplane. She flew from her farm in Bismarck, North Dakota, to the International Aircraft Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. She was milked during the flight and gave 24 quarts of milk which was then sealed in paper containers and dropped, hooked to parachutes, over St. Louis. I'm not sure how humane it was to transport the cow by airplane, but she was kept comfortable, fed, and milked. I don't know whether of not any other cows have been transported anywhere by plane since then.
There are several possibilities for a story here, especially a children's story. This is one to have some fun with.
Pluto Day is the day to celebrate the actual discovery of this tiny planet. On February 18, 1930, this distant planet was discovered by Clyde W. Tombaugh. This is your chance for not only a good historical fiction novel, but you coud also write a science fiction story from the events surrounding this momentous discovery.
