Today In …

1803 - Marbury vs. Madison was determined by the U.S. Supreme Court which helped to establish judicial review.

1868 - Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana became the first place to ever use floats during a parade.

1868 - President Andrew Johnson became the first president ever to be impeached by Congress

1946 - Juan Peron was elected the President of Argentina.

1981 - The engagement of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer was announced by Buckingham Palace.

1988 - The Supreme Court, in an 8 – 0 vote, found in favor “Hustler” magazine’s Larry Flynt in the law case filed against him by Reverend Jerry Falwell.

Barry Bostwick who starred on TV’s “Spin City” was born in 1946.

Jeff Garcia NFL football quarterback was born in 1970.

Wilhelm Grimm who, with his brother Jakob, is best known as one of the Brothers Grimm who created such stories as “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Snow White” was born in 1786. (See my review of The Brother’s Grimm at The Movie Page.net)

Rupert Holmes, the voice behind the song “Escape” a.k.a. “The Pina Colada Song” was born in 1947.

Steven Hill who starred on TV’s “Law & Order” was born in 1922.

Sammy Kershaw the singer behind such hits as “Cadillac Style” and “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” was born in 1958.

Joseph Lieberman the Senator from Connecticut was born in 1942.

Edward James Olmos star of TV’s “Miami Vice” and “Battlestar Galactica” was born in 1947.

John Vernon who starred in such films as “Animal House” as well as a number of TV guest appearances was born in 1932.

Abe Vigoda who starred as Fish in the police series “Barney Miller” was born in 1921.

Paula Zahn TV personality and entertainment journalist was born in 1956.

Billy Zane the actor who starred in “Titanic” and “The Phantom” was born in 1966.

We Said Goodbye To…

Henry Cavendish the scientist known for his work with water passed away in 1810 at the age of 78.

Robert Fulton the renowned inventor and engineer passed away in 1815 at the age of 49.

Don Knotts the actor/comedian who appeared as Barney Fife on TV’s “The Andy Griffith Show” and later as Mr. Furley in “Three’s Company” passed away in 2006 at the age of 81.

Webb Pierce the artist who sang such songs as “I Ain’t Never” and “In the Jailhouse Now” passed away in 1991 at the age of 69.

John Randolph who appeared in the movies “Earthquake”, “Prizzi’s Honor” and “You’ve Got Mail” passed away in 2004 at the age of 88.

Johnnie Ray the voice behind such songs as “Cry” passed away in 1990 at the age of 73.

Dinah Shore entertainer and daytime talk show host passed away in 1994 at the age of 77.

Dennis Weaver who starred on TV’s “Gunsmoke” and “McCloud” passed away in 2006 at the age of 81.

1973 - “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack
2001 - On The Country Charts – “But for the Grace of God” by Keith Urban

Musical Moments In…

1940 - The timeless Disney song “When You Wish Upon A Star” was recorded by Frances Langford.

1969 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last British concert at Royal Albert Hall.

1976 - The “Greatest Hits” by the Eagles was certified platinum. This became the very first album to be certified at this status.

2003 - Robert Trujillo officially became the bassist for the metal band Metallica after the departure of Jason Newsted.
