Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of the bizarre holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.
Which Dr. Seuss book do you enjoy on Dr. Seuss Day? Do you speak as though you were Dr. Seuss all day long? Can you write a story that is as much fun to read as one of his? Do you have a pet that has thumbs? Do you take him out to dinner on If Pets Had Thumbs Day? Or does he fix your dinner on this day?
Dress in Blue Day - Besides the fact that blue is a beautiful color, why would one want to dress in blue on March 2? This is the day that blue is worn to alert people to the dangers of colon cancer. Hmm. I have never associated blue with colon cancer. I really wonder why this particular color was chosen. Then again, there isn't any color I associate with this particular ailment.
You could write a story about why the color blue was chosen to alert people to the dangers of colon cancer. It could be something like How the Whale Got His Throat by Rudyard Kipling.
Dr. Seuss Day and NEA's Read Across America Day kind of go hand-in-hand. It is fitting for Read Across America Day to be celebrated on the birthday of one of the best-known children's authors ever. Who hasn't enjoyed books by Theodore Seuss Geisel? Yes, that was his real name.
How does one celebrate these holidays? You celebrate by reading a book to a child, and you should make it a Dr. Seuss masterpiece. You could choose Green Eggs and Ham or my favorite, Fox in Socks. Or choose one of his many other classics, such as Horton Hears a Who or The Sneetches.
Today you could also try your hand at writing in the style of this literary genius.
If Pets Had Thumbs Day - The one thing that sets humans apart from many of the other species of animals on earth is that humans have thumbs. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your cats and dogs had thumbs, too? Well, one of my cats that died when he was nineteen-years-old did have thumbs. How did Atlas use his thumbs? He would use them to keep his balance and to hold onto things.
Imagine one of your pets has thumbs. Would he or she use these thumbs to do crazy things, things you wouldn't expect your pet to do? Maybe he could use them to do things such as climb a rope or hold a book or maybe even hold onto pots and pans so he can cook? Think like Dr. Seuss and have some fun with this one.
I Want You to be Happy Day - Today you need to do something to make everyone you see happy. It could be done with a simple smile. Or you could do something nice for that certain person like cooking a meal or doing some grocery shopping for him or her.
This could make a great mystery/thriller. You decide to do something really nice for your new neighbor. You've really wanted to get to know this person better, anyway, so you ask him or her over for the evening. But once he is there, you begin to notice inconsistencies in what he is saying. You excuse yourself for a moment to go the restroom, but in reality you want to call someone and have this person come over and get rid of your neighbor. When you pick up the phone, you discover that it has been disconnected. What do you do?
Old Stuff Day - On this day you are supposed to recognize the boring nature of your routine and spice it up a bit. When I first saw the name of this holiday, I figured that it would be a time to go through old things that you have, discard some of them, and make room for new things.
Why not write a story about a treasure that is found when going through the attic? Not only does this treasure promise to bring you money, but it also brings mystery and mayhem into your life. What is it that you find and why does it introduce mystery?
Peach Blossom Day - This is a day to celebrate peach blossoms and also for girls to celebrate their femininity. This holiday can be traced back to its beginnings in Japan where a Doll Festival is held on March 3rd of every year. There is also a Peach Blossom Festival in Hunan, China on this day every year. In both countries, this is the time that the peach trees bloom. So girls, dolls, and peach blossoms together make this a day to be remembered.
How was this day started? Who knows? But you can create its beginnings in your imagination and write them down. Maybe one day it will become the accepted way that this holiday began.
