Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of these zany holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.
Do you keep enough batteries handy to change out all of them on Check Your Batteries Day? Do you save any daylight with Daylight Saving Time? On Johnny Appleseed Day, are you going to plant an apple tree? What tools will you worship on Worship of Tools Day?
Check Your Batteries Day – This holiday was created to remind you to check the batteries in you smoke detector and your carbon monoxide detector, two very important battery-controlled devices that you always need to have good, powerful batteries in. While your at it, you might as well check the batteries in your remote controls, flashlights, and any other items you own that depend on batteries for power. So you don't forget it, this holiday is conveniently on the same day as Daylight Saving Time begins.
Why not write an historical fiction story on how batteries were invented. Or you could write a story about a town where, for some reason, everyone's house is broken into and all of their batteries stolen? Who is stealing all of their batteries? Why? Is something sinister and diabolical planned? Or is the reason all of the batteries are being stolen simple and innocent?
Daylight Saving Time – It is once again time to spring time forward one hour. A much better name for this day would be Daylight Shifting Time or something like that because we aren't actually saving any time, we are just shifting the time on our clocks around a bit.
Write an historical fiction story about why the practice of shifting time on our clocks began. Do you believe this practice is still necessary? Or you could write a story about a world where the clocks have a mind of their own. They like to mess with people and change the time around, sometimes more than once a day, just to throw the world into confusion. Is there any way to gain control of these clocks and stop their madness?
Johnny Appleseed Day - The real name of Johnny Appleseed is John Chapman. So why is he remembered by a different name? He traveled a lot across the U.S. and planted apple trees every place he went. He is believed to have died on March 11, 1845.
Celebrate this day by eating apples and by writing a story about this man who is famous for planting apple trees.
World Plumbing Day - This is a day to celebrate the role that plumbing plays in keeping us healthy. What would the world be like without proper sanitation and plumbing? This would be a good time to send your local plumber a thank you card for the service he provides. You could also treat yourself to a brand new toilet today. What better day to buy one?
Think about it. What would your world be like without flushing toilets? What would it be like if you didn't have clean water? Imagine what your life would be like and write a story about it.
Girl Scout Sunday - Is there any person alive that doesn't love Girl Scout cookies? On this day we celebrate the Girl Scouts. This group teaches young girls valuable skills and they raise money by selling some pretty tasty cookies.
Were you ever a Girl Scout? If not, did you know someone who was one? Research the Girl Scouts and write about their creation. Or you could write a story about a Girl Scout and how she solved the mystery of the disappearing cookies.
Worship of Tools Day – This holiday was probably created with guys in mind. Is there a man in existence who isn't fascinated by tools? Does a man exist who wouldn't drool over a new set of wrenches or a brand-new hammer?
This day may have been created with guys in mind, but why not change that around a bit for a story. Write a story about a lady whose life is filled with tools of every kind. She builds, she works on the car, and she repairs. Every guy around envies the skill that this lady has, so they all get together and steal all of her tools one at a time. That works until she catches one of them going through her precious stash of tools. What happens?
