Napping Day & Other Goofy Holidays

Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of these goofy holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.

How many naps do you plan on taking on Napping Day? Are you going to have a Donald Duck cartoon festival on Donald Duck Day? Are you going to be brave enough to open an umbrella inside your house on National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day?

Napping Day - This day is set aside to help people adjust to the time change that occurs during Daylight Saving Time. This holiday was created in 1999 by a Boston University professor and his wife. Since we do lose one hour of sleep when time springs forward an hour, this much-needed holiday should be taken advantage of by one and all.

Imagine you live in a land where naps have been outlawed. Do people walk around tired and sleepy all the time? Does their ability to work effectively go down? There are those who want it to be legal for people to take naps once again. Do they start a revolution? Do they just rebel and start napping in defiance of the current law? Do others join with them in what they are doing? What happens?

Donald Duck Day - Donald Duck became a household name after his debut on June 9, 1934. He first appeared in the cartoon, “The Wise Little Hen”. March 13 is the birthday of this lovable duck. In what year was he born? He was born in 1914, so this year Donald Duck will be 97 years old.

Can you possibly create a duck that will be as lovable and memorable as Donald Duck? Create your character and write the story that will introduce him (or her) to the world.

Ear Muff Day - Ear muffs protect your ears from the cold. This is the day we celebrate the creation of these toasty warm ear coverings by Chester Greenwood. You can thank him for protecting you from earaches and ear infections resulting from exposure to cold winter weather.

On this day, why not write a story about how ear muffs were used to keep someone from losing their ears?

Ken Day - Believe it or not, I couldn't find any information on this holiday except for its day, March 13. It probably celebrates the debut of the Ken, the male doll associated with Barbie.

Why not write a story about the creation of the Ken doll?

National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day - This is the first holiday I’ve come across that is based on a superstition. I'm sure you all have heard how it is bad luck to open an umbrella indoors. Some say that it is unlucky only if the umbrella happens to be black. Then again, some say that it is unlucky only if the umbrella were a gift. Others say that it is unlucky only if the umbrella has never been used outdoors. If you believe that all of those things are true, then it would be perfectly all right if you opened a red umbrella that was a gift and had been used outdoor inside your house.

This one could be fun. Write a story about this superstition where this superstition turns into reality.
