Goji Berry

The Goji berry is a nutrient packed super food you and your birds can't do without. One of the most versatile plants you can now grow is the Goji berry. It is also named the Wolfberry or Chinese wolfberry. You will see reference to it in traditional Chinese medicine as the gouqqizi. This is a highly versatile plant where everything can be eaten; both the Goji berries, shoots, and leaves. The berry can be fed fresh or can be dehydrated or dried for later use.

The best part is the nutritional properties of the berries and the plants. The berry itself has over fifteen percent protein. 18 amino acids, and 21 essential minerals. They contain the essential fatty acids and antioxidants. They are also a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin E.

The pharmacological name is Lycii fructus or Lycium fruit.

I wanted to plant the Goji plants to have a fresh source of goji berries, shoots and leaves for my pet birds and exotic pets. The plant is a wonderful fresh supplement for my parrots.

I bought a couple of plants last year to see how they would grow in South Dakota. I was pleasantly surprised as they reached heights of seven feet. often shooting out new vines. It fruited early and plentifully. The plant was beautiful and delicate looking.

My next curiosity if it begins to grow after our long and cold winter. I will be looking carefully for the first little sprouts to spring from the ground.

Don't go too overboard with the goji berries they do have a high iron content. Too much iron is not good for birds. You can feed quite a bit though before you need to worry much. The berries have 9 milligrams of iron in 100 GRAMS of the dried goji berries. Honestly, the only problem I have ever seen with birds is the additive ferrous sulfate which of course, the goji berry doesn't have any ferrous sulfate added :)

I think it would be a shame not to feed the goji plant and the goji berry to your birds. The biggest problem with a bird's health resulting in high cost veterinarian care and a shorter lifespan, is nutrition. I can't think of a better way of supplementing a bird's diet than with the goji plant and goji berry.

Don't forget they are good for you too!

The taste, kind of a cross between a raspberry and a cranberry. They were great into salads too. (So were the leaves!)
