| Recently, the team at Ecards-Ecards-Ecards started a new marketing campaign featuring their newest ecards. Part of that campaign was to feature their new FlashR animated Birthday ecard on their Facebook Timeline as a tab, which is now called an app, in the Favorites section just under the Timeline Cover.|
One option for this is to use the Static HTML iFrame Tabs app by Timothy Mensing and Jason Padvorac. This app has been one of the most popular Facebook apps for many years and was used by many to create a custom default landing page for their Facebook pages. We no longer have the option to designate a specific default landing page and all traffic to our Facebook page will initially land on the Timeline with the cover image. However, the app is still one of the best for creating apps for your Timeline Favorites because it doesn't required access to the Facebook user's personal information.
The Static HTML iFrame Tabs has been updated to work with the new Timeline. For the previous version, the width of the page was 520 px with a 200 px wide side menu. For the updated Timeline version, the side menu is gone and the width of the app page has been expanded to 820px, the same width as the Timeline.
The app functions as before, with two page views - Public and Fans page. Initially your visitors see the Public page until they Like your Facebook page. Then they will see the Fans page. Just as before, this gives us an opportunity to create a call to action that will increase the number of Likes for your Timeline.
For the new campaign, the team wanted the app's Public page to have a background image created from the same artwork featured in the ecard. On this page is the call to action to Like the page in order to view the ecard animation, which is an embedded YouTube video.
Because we have a width of 820 px to work with, we first resized the original high resolution image to 810 x 1013 px. However, this caused some of the image to be below the fold on some computer screens. Therefore we reduced the image to a more workable 480 x 600 px. Next we added the HTML to display our call to action image over the top of the background image. On the Fans page, we used the same background image and replace the call to action HTML with our YouTube video of the Racing Car Birthday ecard and links to the Ecards-Ecards-Ecards website.
The steps have changed slightly for installing the Static HTML iFrame Tabs app in the new Facebook Timeline. Let's walk through the process of installing and building the app.
