There are an abundance of unique holidays in April. Whether you prefer to write mysteries or romance, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction, I'm sure you can find one of them that catches your eye and causes storylines to start running through your mind.
Will you remember to take your ascorbic acid on Vitamin C Day? Are you going to buy a pet rat on World Rat Day? How many lies will you tell on Tell a Lie Day?
Vitamin C Day - Ascorbic acid, better known as Vitamin C and naturally present in fruits and green vegetables is used in the treatment and prevention of scurvy, a disease where your gums are swollen and bleeding, among other things. April 4 commemorates the day that it was discovered just how important this vitamin is to our health and well-being.
Before all the benefits of Vitamin C were discovered, scurvy was a problem especially with sailors. Create a young boy who works aboard a ship. Because he does not get enough Vitamin C, he feels the symptoms of scurvy start to develop. What does he do?
World Rat Day - This holiday does not celebrate the rats that invade our homes that we try every way possible to get rid of. This day recognizes the fancy rat as a great pet and companion for people of any age. April 4 was chosen for this holiday because in 2002 because this is believed to be the day the Ratlist was started. What is the Ratlist? It is a Yahoo group of people that are dedicated to the pet rat.
I don't know that I could ever have a pet rat, but if there was a rat like Ratatouille, I might consider it. On this day, why not write a humorous story about the pet rat that you would like to have?
Walk Around Things Day - If you have a toddler in your home, you probably walk around toys every day. If you have a bunch of cats in the house, chances are you are dodging cats each time you walk down the hallway. This day isn't about those things, though. This is a day when you can walk around your problems and deal with them another day.
The creator and origin of this holiday isn't known, so come up with a reason this day was created. Did someone finally get sick of tired of the problems that were faced every day and just didn't want to deal with them any longer?
Tell a Lie Day - Writers of fiction, rejoice! There is no record of who started this day or why, but maybe it was a writer. What do we do when we write fiction? We tell lies and make them believable, even if what we are writing could never, ever happen. Reading should be a time of escape. The story should be so entertaining that we are able to get away from our life's problems for just a little while.
This is a day to celebrate your writing! Create a character who has entered a contest to see who can tell the most convincing lie.
