Author Ursula Poznanski has written a book that is full of chills and thrills, one where the action never stops. Erebos was written for those ages 12 and up, but it won't just be of interest to those who are young in years. Those who are young at heart should find it just as engrossing. The book is 440 pages long, and I read it in just over a day. I couldn't put it down.

Nick notices his best friend, Colin, acting really strange. Actually, he notices that a lot of the other kids at school are behaving in odd ways, and they are being really secretive about something. No one will tell him what it is all about, though. Then one day a girl swears him to secrecy, then hands him a package containing a disc with this new computer game on it. But he musn't tell anyone about it, and he has to play it in complete secrecy. The computer game is called Erebos.

He goes home and loads the game. It loads really slow and has no instructions, but he soon catches on. When he gets to the part where he needs to tell the game his name, he gives it the name he always uses for computer games. The guy on the screen informs him that he wants his real name. He tries another name, and the guy on the screen tells him one more time that his real name is required. Nick thinks the game is malfunctioning, but tells it his real name anyways. He is expecting the same answer, but is shocked when it takes his real name.

This is just the beginning of the creepiness. Is this game alive? How did it know when Nick finally told it his real name?

As Nick continues to play the game, it changes him, just as it has changed all of the others who are playing it. The game becomes the most important thing in his life. Then it gives him a job to do that he won't carry out. He tries to fool the game, but the game can't be fooled and it kills his character off and banishes him from the game.

Once he isn't playing any more, he starts to think and realizes that something sinister is going on. He realizes that the game has to be stopped. With the help of a friend, he sets out to do just that. Will he succeed? Or will the game stop him first. It has tried to kill before. Will it succeed and kill him?

This book takes a look into the dark side of the world of virtual gaming. If you like so much action in a book that it is nearly impossible to stop reading until you reach the end, you will love this book. My copy came to me free of charge from NetGalley.
