A Cut Above

I love to watch television shows that have extreme transformations like the ones seen on America's Next Top Model, when they totally change the look of the model with a haircut or color or both. I do not however like "makeover" shows or even the term as they suggest that something was wrong with the person beforehand.

We look the way we look. I do not believe any look we choose to carry is wrong for us at that particular moment but I do believe we should experiment outside our comfort zone every once in a while. Especially plus size women who I think can get pigeon holed into a comfortable look more easily than the average woman.

For me about every six or seven years I get an itch for a change that is usually drastic. As you can see from my editor photo above, I fall into the long blonde hair category of styles and I have been for most of my life. It is my go to comfort style for the most part. But when the itch comes, I want it short, usually shorter than the hairdresser is comfortable going.

Last year the itch came I forced my hairdresser to take off 17 inches of hair. It really hurt her more than it did me. I know from experience that it grows back. She does too but she was still terrified I would come back and maim her. I did not. I embraced the new look and actually went back a few weeks later because I felt she did not go short enough. I also did something else I went really dark. I call it my Elvis hair.

I loved the new look. It was playful, easy to take care of and totally what I needed for the last eight months. No fuss, no muss. I have since grown out the color and the length a little bit longer but I have not committed myself to growing back the 17 inches yet but I know it is probably not far off.

My point for today's commentary is I really want to encourage you to do something drastically different with your hair, especially if you have not done anything with it for some time. Commit to the change and commit to living with the consequences. Hair is hair, it grows back!

Hair can totally change the way we feel with the way it moves or does not move, the way it shapes around our face, or the amount of time it takes to deal with it in the morning or at night.

You do not have to be as drastic as I was. Work up to it with little changes. If all you ever do is wear your long hair in a ponytail then try braiding it for a change (there are hundreds of How-To videos on YouTube). If your hair is already short grow it out a few inches here or there. Change the color by having a few foils of highlights put in or get an all over color.

When it comes to color, invest in a hair salon where the color can be controlled and matched to your skin tone. Do not experiment with box color at home unless you have had good experiences in the past. I am serious about this. If you screw up, you are stuck with the results or have to end up going to a salon to get it fixed any way. If a salon screws up they have to keep working until they fix it.

I do not want you to change because there is something wrong with the way you look. I want you to change because you are a multifaceted person who deserves to play with more than one look and our endless supply of hair is the best option for doing so.
