Children of the Fog - a Review

Children of the Fog is a mystery thriller written by Cheryl Kaye Tardif.

The Fog is a serial abductor of children. He (or she) takes them out of their beds in the dead of night and never leaves behind any trace that he was there. No one has ever seen the kidnapper, so the police have no clues, no description, absolutely nothing to help them find the criminal.

Sadie, a best-selling author and a recovering alcoholic is married to an adulterous husband. Her books are selling and life is good. The center of her life and the reason for her living is her son. His sixth birthday is nearing and she throws a huge party for him. The highlight of this party is the clown hired by her husband to entertain the horde of children.

The night before his birthday, Sadie hears noises coming from Sam's room. She goes to check on him and discovers that the Fog is in his room. Sam is being kidnapped. What does a mother do in a situation like this? Of course, she begs him not to take her son, but he won't listen. Would you really expect a kidnapper to listen to your pleas? This armed abductor gives Sadie an ultimatum – she can quit trying to stop him, or he will shoot Sam right in front of her. If she tells anyone that she has seen him, he will send her son back to her in pieces. Now her life begins spinning out of control.

Sadie doesn't tell, but she does draw a picture of him and writes down in detail what happened in Sam's room that horrible night. She hides this stuff somewhere that she believes it won't be found, but her husband finds it and takes it all to the police. Not long after she receives a package with a little finger inside. Now she really begins to lose it.

What is happening in Sadie's life is every mother's worst nightmare. Convinced that she has lost her son, she leaves and goes to stay in a cabin for a while and is visited by some children during the night. When she mentions these children to the lady who owns the cabin, she discovers that these same children died five years ago in a fire. Did she just imagine them while in an alcoholic haze? Or has she really gone over the edge and completely lost her sanity?

The author, through the very real characters and situations she has created, keeps you on the edge throughout the entire book. I bought my copy of this book from Amazon. If you would like your own copy to read and enjoy, I have provided a link below for you. Warning – once you start the book, be prepared to not put it down until you have finished it.
