Author James W. Lewis bring us the tale a woman's unique, twisted revenge on her cheating husband in The Cut Up.
Let's say you are a married woman. One day you come home, open your door, and walk into your house. You hear shrieks coming from upstairs. You are startled, so you cautiously venture up the stairs to see what is going on. And you find your husband, the man you've been married to for twenty-two years, in bed with another woman, a much younger woman. How would you react?
Eve shocks both her philandering husband and his current fling by being calm and civil. Please notice that I said “current” fling. There have been others. Anyway, Eve even goes so far as to invite the young lady to stay for dinner. Is she really that calm? Or is she planning something that will put a stop to her husband's cheating ways for good?
This story is very short. It is only eight pages long and can be read completely in about ten minutes or so, but the very talented Mr. Lewis manages to pack these eight pages full of surprises, twists, turns, and the revenge of a woman who has had enough. One minute you think that Eve is a very calm woman who is handling the situation pretty well, then you think that she has lost her mind, then you come to the realization that maybe she had this all planned out in advance. I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of revenge.
Would I recommend that a woman scorned take Eve's course of action in a real-life situation? No, but I'm sure that if you have been cheated on, you've had thoughts of handling the situation in a similar fashion.
