Newman's Lite Balsamic Vinegar Dressing is a salad dressing with only 2g of carbs and 45 calories per serving. That's only half of what most salad dressings have. How does it taste?
I think it's important to say up front that of course you should like balsamic vinegar if you are going to try this dressing. :) My boyfriend, for example, absolutely hates the smell and taste of balsamic vinegar. It has a quite distinctive flavor that is different from "normal" / white vinegar. So if you've never tried balsamic vinegar before, the next time a friend gets a salad with some at a restaurant, or you visit her house and she has some in the fridge, give it a try. It can be one of those love / hate types of flavors.
So that being said, I do love balsamic vinegar. I think it's a fantastic flavor for marinades, mushrooms, and salads as well. So I was quite keen on seeing how the Newman light version of it tasted.
I was quite pleased with their offering. You get that nice, full flavor of balsamic vinegar. It isn't watery or weak. And at the same time it has enough oilyness that it sticks thoroughly to the salad. That way you don't have to make a "soup" to dip in. The salad is evenly coated with a light layer.
For the 2 Tbsp serving (a standard in salad dressings) you get 45 calories, 2g of carbs, 0g of protein, and 250mg of sodium. There aren't any nutrients at all like calcium or vitamin C in a serving.
The ingredients are all delightfully recognizable. There is balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. There's garlic, onion, and paprika. So you know what you're ingesting which is always a nice thing in food.
I also happen to adore the Newman brand because it all supports charities. I am strongly charity minded and like to support companies that have that same charity desire. So even if this costs more than a store brand I'm willing to pay more to help with that charity effort.
So again my only caveat here is that balsamic vinegar is definitely a unique kind of flavor. It's not for everyone. But if you do like it, I recommend seeking this light version out!
