With the end of the year rapidly approaching, many of us begin to reflect on our lives and start to set goals for the new year. However many resolutions fail within the first couple of weeks due to the lack of an effective plan with specific goals. Before you know it, another year has passed leaving you in the same rut and no closer to living the life of your dreams. Life is but a fleeting moment in time, and if you want to live a life of purpose, here are five resolutions that can truly make an impact on your future.
“If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.” Eubie Blake
Resolution One: Take better care of your health now. It's common for people to look back on their life when facing an illness, heart condition, or perhaps relying on an oxygen tank to breathe, and wonder why they didn't take better care of themselves. No one wants to end up in a nursing home, assisted care facility or a hospital in their later years because they neglected their health. If you want to have a good quality of life, it's up to you to make good food choices and increase your activity level on a daily basis. The fact is that inactivity, poor food choices, excessive alcohol intake and smoking can lead to: obesity, diabetes, emphysema, heart attack, stroke and many other health issues. Don't continue to put off taking care of your health, rationalizing you will in the future. The time is now! Start setting goals to become more active and begin to eliminate processed and packaged foods from your kitchen. Buy a cookbook with healthy recipe options and begin to experiment with new recipes. Exploring new foods and dishes can be exciting and will allow you to find healthy dishes you enjoy, making it easier to stick to a healthier lifestyle.
"No matter what you've done for yourself or for humanity, if you can't look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished?" - Lee Iacocca
Resolution Two: Make a point to treasure your family and loved ones. Don't wait until it's too late to show them that you value them and the important role they play in your life. It's so easy to get caught up in long hours at work, television programs, hobbies, and social media, and it can rob you of precious time and communication with your loved ones. Make each and every day count and spend as much time as you can with those you love. If you have a hobby that takes time away from the family, why not get your family involved so that you can spend more time doing things you enjoy together. This is a great way to encourage better communication and bring you closer together as a family.
“Too many people spend money they haven't earned to buy things they don't want to impress people they don't like” -Will Smith
Resolution Three: Learn to place less importance on things and more on people. Our society promotes status with expensive cars, homes, clothing, jewelry, cell phones, and a host of other expensive items. The truth is that it's not things that make you happy. It's learning to love and accept yourself and building nurturing relationships with family and loved ones.
“A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.” -John Barrymore
Resolution Four: Go for your dream. If you have a strong desire to pursue something you are passionate about, take steps now to work towards that dream. Many people as they get older and reflect back on their lives, regret not pursuing their life dream. Write it down, place it on your refrigerator, and make a point to do something everyday that will bring you closer to that goal. True happiness is being able to live a life doing something your are passionate about. So go ahead and take steps now to pursue your dream and make it happen.
“For every minute you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Resolution Five: Learn to let go of anger and replace It with compassion. Anger is a useless emotion that is a waste of time and can rob you of happiness. Learn to express yourself and let go of anger through healthy behaviors such as a long walk, a hard workout, or a laugh with a good friend. You may want to consider taking a yoga or meditation class to help you learn proper breathing techniques which can help decrease stress and dissipate angry emotions. It also helps to journal your feelings to help work out problems and emotions on paper. Finding ways to work through anger in a healthy way will give you much more time for happiness and creating wonderful memories with family and loved ones.
