If you are a woman and have gained more than 20 pounds since high school, your risk for breast cancer has now increased by 40%.
Researchers have always known there was a link between a woman being overweight and her risk for breast cancer, but new studies have made that link incredibly clear. Twenty pounds made a significant difference, and women who were obese - carrying 70 pounds or more of extra weight - saw their risk for breast cancer double.
In the old days, researchers thought that it was eating fat that caused breast cancer. But now resesarchers realize that it is your BODY fat that creates estrogen. The more fat you carry on your body, the more estrogen your body produces, and the higher your risk for breast cancer. The lowest incidences of breast cancer in the studies were in women who were in menopause who were not taking any estrogen supplements.
Fat is added to your body when more carbohydrates / sugars are consumed than the body can metabolize at a given time. The body stores the extra carbohydrates away for "later use" as fat cells. The aim of low carb diets is to reverse the high sugar and processed food diet that most people in developed countries have become addicted to. Low carb diets instead focus on eating lots of fresh vegetables, healthy fish and chicken, and only multi-grain breads and pastas.
