Finishing the Roll Up Sewing Kit

Find the middle of the ribbon and fold it over the edge of the free end of lace as shown in the photo.

Using thread that matches the ribbon, sew through all layers of the ribbon and lace about 3/16 of an inch from the edge. Sew this part securely so that it will not come apart.
adding ribbon ties

Lay the lace flat with the outside facing up. Fold up the ribbon on the bottom side so that it is going away from the lace as shown in the photo.

Sew a small button or other small decoration on top of the area where the stitching is.

This pulls the ribbon flat so that it ties more nicely without a bump.

adding button embellishment

Now you can start adding your notions. I used several sizes of safety pins, straight pins, snaps, hook/bar and hook/eye closures, some needles, and a few buttons in various sizes on the bottom strip of felt. Attach the closures and buttons by sewing them on with a doubled thread. Be sure to tie off the thread in between each item or paired item so that if you remove one item, the rest don't come loose.

The top strip is where your thread should go. The best way that I found to do this is to start at the inside edge and insert one pin at a time and wrap it with thread before placing the next pin. As you wrap the additional pins, you have to watch that you don't push any of the previous ones out, losing the loops. Continue across the strip, adding as many thread pins as you wish.
adding sewing notions

Here is the completed sewing kit, all rolled up and tied. You may need to trim the ribbon tie ends to the length that you prefer.

I like this concept because by adding your own notions, you can customize it to what you might need. I added buttons that mostly match my husband's clothes because he is always losing a button somewhere. If, instead of lace, you use a ribbon that is masculine/neutral, you can make this kit for a man with thread in colors suited to men's apparel. Another idea is to take the extra buttons that come with your clothing when you purchase them and sew those inside the kit so you have them on hand when you need them.
