2D Edit Tools for 3D Text in Photoshop CS6

Text is one of the most popular 3D design elements and PhotoshopR CS6 makes creating and editing 3D much easier than before. With the new 3D button in the Options bar, you can convert 2D text to 3D in one click and with the Vanishing Point Grid for the Camera widget, you can automatically align new 3D objects into your scene.

New Extrude To 3D Button

We can convert 2D text to 3D with just a click of the new Extrude To 3D icon on the Horizontal Text Tool Options bar. As you can see, the flat 2D text is converted to a basic gray 3D text. Now we can use the 3D Mesh Cage Control to scale, rotate and move the text.

New in Photoshop CS6, we have the same 2D text editing features available when our text has been convert to 3D text. The 3D text and text paths can be edited with the same 2D tools now available in the Options Bar, Character and Paragraph panels. For example, we can change the font family and font color in the Character panel.

But our text is still the basic gray. We can easily add textures to our mesh with the 3D and Properties panels. For example, in the Properties panel we can use the Materials section to add textures. By clicking the small folder icons next to the material of your choice, you can load your material jpg and choose which texture to apply to the text.

Adding 3D Objects

We can easily add 3D objects and align them with the other elements in our scene with the Vanishing Point Grid feature. We first establish the grid for the background image. Then, we match the camera view with this grid by choosing Vanishing Point Grid from the Camera widget popup menu.

Photoshop will use this information as a guide for aligning other objects that we add to the scene. To add a new 3D object, click 3D - New 3D Layer from File in the Menubar. Choose the .obj file of your choice and the new object will be automatically aligned within the scene.

We can then use the new 3D Mesh Cage Control to scale, move or rotate the new object. We can also change the lighting and shadow if needed or add textures.
