Making My Friends Fat

Tonight while surfing the Internet's infinite wisdom I stopped over at the San Francisco Chronicle to read an article by Deepak Chopra, How your neighbor can make you fat (or thin). Holy crap what a load of bunk.

I do not know why but I expected someone as spiritually minded a Chopra to have a better view of fat people (and how they become fat). But basically he is spewing the same fat hate propaganda that many other news sources are pushing out -- stay away from fat people because they will make you fat!

Basically the article talks about the outcome of a research project on the social dynamics of a small town in Massachusetts. The results:
"...when someone gains weight, starts smoking, or gets sick, close family members and friends are around 50% more likely to behave the same way. This reinforces a social-science principle that is decades old: behavior runs in groups. We have all experienced it as peer pressure, or by knowing families where everyone seems to be overweight or a smoker. The reverse is also true. If you run with a healthy crowd, you are more likely to adopt healthy behavior yourself."

So not only can I make my friends fat but I can also make their other friends fat by association:
"They found that social connections can skip a link. If person A is obese and knows person B who isn't, a friend of person B is still 20% more likely to be obese, and a friend of that friend is 10% more likely."

As if fat people don't have a hard enough time in social settings, Chopra who has over fifty books in print, has to instill more fear into the mindless minions out there who already think that fat people should stay home and not infringe on their space and field of view.

If this is the case then I must be an exception to the rule because according to these theories I should be a lot slimmer than I am or my husband should be a lot heavier than he is; considering the most time we spend with another person is each other.

So? How about it? Are you making your friends fat?
