Actor Brett Cullen’s Paranormal Encounter

During the year 1998, Actor Brett Cullen rented a two-story Victorian home in Richmond, Virginia to stay in while filming the post-Civil War drama called Legacy. He rented the beautiful old home from two fellows. One of the two men had lived in the house his entire life. His grandfather had purchased the home from a surgeon who had been a doctor during the Civil War.

When Cullen was first shown the home, he was introduced to the front parlor. This room had been the surgery room where the doctor worked on soldiers that had been injured during the Civil War. Still visible in the wooden floor of this room were two holes about the size of a quarter which had been used for draining blood from the doctor’s patients. Looking at these small holes, Cullen realized how many men must have died in the house during the Civil War.

Initially, the paranormal activity was rather mild. Cullen would hear footsteps around the house, especially following him up the stairs from the front parlor.

One morning at about 2:00 or 3:00 a.m., something awakened Cullen. Looking out of the doorway of his room, he saw his three-year-old daughter standing in the hallway by the head of the stairs. He called to her, but she didn’t reply and ran down the stairs to the first floor.

Wondering what was going on, he got up and went downstairs after her. He couldn’t find her downstairs anywhere.

Cullen then heard his daughter calling to him…from upstairs. He went up to her and she told him she was scared. Cullen was scared as well because whoever had ran down the stairs had not been his daughter.

He decided to talk to his landlord about the occurrences. The man who had lived in the house all of his life until recently told Cullen that he had never experienced anything at all. He said that there were always lots of people around, though, lots of kids and lots of noise, so it was possible that he just didn’t notice anything odd with all the activity.

He did tell Cullen that Civil War battles had occurred around the house during the time that the surgeon had lived in it with his family. He said that the doctor had a young daughter who had been hit by a musket ball. Her father had operated on her in an attempt to save her life, but she died in the house.

Cullen felt that possibly it was their presence that had awakened the little girl’s energy. He stayed in the house for a year. He never felt alone, but he never felt in any danger.
