How to Sew a Men's Shirt - the Collar Stand

In this step, we will be working with the collar stand pieces as well as the collar stand interfacing. Examine your collar stand pieces and decide which piece you want to have showing on the outside of the shirt. Mark the other piece with a pin. This piece is now your collar stand facing. Apply interfacing as desired to the collar stand piece.

Place the collar stand facing wrong side up on your ironing board and press the unnotched edge over 5/8 inch (or the seam allowance called out in your particular pattern, if different) toward the wrong side.

Now you will sandwich your prepared collar between the collar stand and collar stand facing. Lay your collar stand piece right side up and place the collar right side up (the undercollar will be facing down) and match the notches. Place the collar stand on top of the stack, right side down, aligning the edges and notches with the collar stand on the bottom. Pin in place.

Sew around the notched edge of the collar stand starting at the folded edge of the collar stand facing. Press seam flat.

Trim and grade the seam beginning with the interfaced collar stand so that the collar stand facing seam allowance is the widest . Notch the curved area at each end (not pictured).

Now it is time to attach the collar stand to the neckline of the shirt. Pin the the collar stand to the neck of the shirt, right sides together and match up notches and any other markings noted on your pattern (on mine, there are dots that match up with the front yoke seam).

Pin the ends of the collar stand just past the edges of the center fronts. Clip the curved area of the neckline as needed (do not clip past the staystitching) to allow the collar stand to fit along the edge; pin in place.

Stitch collar and collar stand together using the recommended seam allowance. Press the seam flat.

Grade the seam allowances and clip the curves. Press seam allowance away from the shirt and toward the collar.

Pull the pressed edge of the collar stand facing down so that it just barely covers the seam that you just sewed along the inside of the neck and pin in place. Stitch the collar stand facing in place by hand with a slip stitch.

Edge stitch around the entire collar stand close to the seam.

Now your collar is completely done! We are on the home stretch now.

The next tutorial will be the last segment and will focus on preparing and sewing the sleeves in.

Happy sewing!
