Things to Do in October in Florida

The Epcot International Food and Wine Festival at Walt Disney World runs throughout October and into November and is a food and wine lover’s delight. 30 global marketplaces are set up to serve cuisine and beverages from around the world on small plates. Watch celebrity chef demonstrations and attend a mixology seminar to learn how to shake the perfect cocktail. Everyone who has visited raves about the experience, the only downside being the cost. Expect to spend at least $70 throughout the day on your food and beverage samples, which cost from $4-9 each, and that’s on top of the usual admission price of $94.79.

Better value, but obviously not quite as much fun, St Augustine host the Flavors of Florida’s Historic Coast Fest from 1-31 October, 2012. Held in the Old City, as well as the usual attractions, museums, tours and activities participating restaurants offer a 3-course prix-fixe menu for a modest set price. This culinary festival is the chance to sample some of the local chefs’ signature dishes at very attractive prices.

Festival Miami starts 2 Oct, 2012 with two months of diverse musical offerings which include concerts, seminars and superb concerts to suit all tastes, from jazz to classical.

In neighboring Coral Gables, the Fairchild Birding Festival takes place from 4-7 October 2012. Ideal for bird lovers and beginners wanting to know more, you can tour the lovely Fairchild Botanical Gardens with an ornithological expert, join a guided bird walk or buy bird-friendly plants from the garden center.

If you fancy spending time on the beach, Jacksonville Beach is hosting the 45th US Surfing Championship the first weekend in October. However, it will be incredibly crowded, so if you simply want a dip, head south to one of St Augustine’s beautiful beaches. St Augustine also hosts an Art Walk on the First Friday of every month with complimentary shuttle trains transporting visitors between galleries.

Sailing enthusiasts may be interested in attending the Summerset Regatta at Fort Myers Beach from October 5-7. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along the firm sands in the onshore breeze while watching the event.

Coral Gables is hosting the 18th Annual Oktoberfest from 5-14 October 2012. There’s an authentic decorated beer garden, yodeling, bratwurst eating contests and live entertainment by bands from the home of Oktoberfest – Germany! Admission is free.

Finally, Amelia Island is hosting a Jazz Festival from 7-14 October on Fernandina Beach. There’s a free concert in Amelia Park on Sunday 7th from 4-6pm and various ticketed events throughout the week.

With all this going on, what are you waiting for? Be there!
