The Milton Kattner Golf Scramble

The Salado Presbyterian Church had their first Milton Kattner Golf Scramble and proved to be a wonderful day for 25 happy golfers. This was a wild idea of our pastor to have a golf scramble on one of our great cool fall Sunday afternoons. So for some reason I was asked to plan such an event along with another fellow choir member Chine and our physician in Chief Bev. We are a small church but by far the most friendly and loving group in town. We enjoy the fellowship and worship plus throw in a good time with food and now golf.

The planning was emails going back and forth while I made arrangements with the Pro at the golf course. We soon had 25 sign up so made the tee times for after 1:00 p.m. for five teams of five players on each team. We decided to make this a nine hole golf scramble. I set up a tentative team list but knew it would not stand as some would drop out and others added. I was right on that as during the fellowship lunch time after church the teams were being worked on. I knew it would all fall together by tee time and so it happened as we gathered at the Mill Creek club house that afternoon.

Chine gave all of us instructions as to how this Scramble would work and my team was in the lead off group. Chine paid special attention to Milton Kattner as Milt who is 93 and had played golf for years but now spends his days working on golf clubs. Chine added a long drive contest and closest to the pin and handed me these stakes to start the contest. I happened to be the first to write my name on both pins as I put down the stakes. We had a good group three girls and two guys. It was a lot of laughs as everyone hit some great shots and helped the team.

After play we did not have to wait too long for the rest to arrive at the club house and Chine and I decided on how to distribute the prizes. Bev had picked up some gift certificates to Starbauch and Target for first and second prizes. We also accumulated a variety of other fun things for the rest and everybody receive something. Our minister Carl announced that this would be a twice a year event, in spring and fall and call it the Milton Kattner Annual Golf Scramble. Milt was there for all of it as was riding with Bev on her team. He was so pleased with the attention and the honor of having it named after him. We also had the youngest member in our scramble so glad to have Luke join in the fun.

Golf can be enjoyed in so many ways so try a church group sometimes it brings everyone together for fun on the golf course.
