Most of us at some time have done a connect-the-dot picture. What if it was a picture of your life, could you connect-the-dots if you didn’t have a pencil or a pen to work with? Each choice we make in our lives is like connecting one dot to another and as we complete the pictures, they tell the story of our life.
Along the way we may run out of ink, or break our pencil, and at that time the social services network of our country steps in and metaphorically gives us a hand up, a new pencil or pen or even a box of crayons; and that box of crayons is enough to not only allow us to connect-the-dots of the next picture in our story, but also to add colors and brightness to a dull and difficult story or a sad story of devastation and despair.
We have just witnessed a major weather disaster in our country. Hurricane Sandy has devastated large areas of the Eastern Seaboard and many Mid-Atlantic states and has even left its mark further west of the coastline … Indeed all of America has been touched by this major weather event as we in America are all connected. The storm that brought so much devastation to so many was like no other we’ve seen - delivering rain, ocean surges, wind and snow. We have also just witnessed and will continue to witness Americans doing what they do best – connecting the dots and helping other Americans in need. Through the coming weeks and months we will continue to witness and be involved in this amazing spectacle as it unfolds as some step up personally and as we support our state governments, FEMA, and the Red Cross and all the many First Responders and all who will respond from all America over the long clean-up of this natural disaster. At all times we knew that President Obama would do all that had to be done to make the federal support services immediately available to all the states who need them and to all the people who rely on a strong social services support system. The immediate response of FEMA is like each and every one of us being there to lend a hand to help our fellow Americans in need because we as American Citizens are our government.
The Social Services network in our country is like those pencils, pens and crayons that help people connect-the-dots to the story of their lives. Our government services provide food, shelter, medical care and help to men, women and children including those who are shattered by life’s events and natural disasters, and those unemployed or under-employed and dealing with various difficulties of life. We as Americans must never allow Humanity to be trampled by anyone’s Greed and Fear. We share our pencils, pens and crayons, not only during catastrophes but everyday to always work together on our connect-the-dots picture of this place called America – our country – our home. Pitch in anyway you can to help when you can and where you can to help other Americans connect-the-dots because this great country of ours is the biggest Connect-the-Dot picture of all.
