In the movie, the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was transported to a magical land of self discovery by a tornado. But in reality, most tornadoes are not so obliging!
Tornadoes, also known as twisters, are the fiercest and most violent of all storm activity, with winds reaching 100 to 300 mph. Tornadoes are born on land when a cold front meets a warm front. They are funnel shaped, and their narrow base touches the earth, while their much wider top end touches the clouds.
Most tornadoes only last one to twenty minutes, though the most brutal tornadoes may last up to an hour. They are fast, unpredictable, powerful, and devastate everything in their wake.
Tornadoes are primarily an air element, with their powerful winds carrying dust and debris; though they may touch down on water, or create a water spout.
Tornado dreams usually represent clash or violent upheaval; personalities, beliefs, situations or ideas that just cannot blend (think of the two air systems that create the tornado in the first place). They also represent major change; sudden and difficult, and swift action.
If you are dreaming of tornadoes, it is important to look at what is going on in your life that is causing you stress, fear or upset. Are you struggling to stay in a situation that should be changing or moving forward? Do you feel that your life is out of control? Is the erratic, unpredictable nature of a situation wearing you down?
In your dream were you in the tornado, in the midst of the destruction, or watching it from a distance, wondering if it would come your way?
The powerful energy of the tornado can tear down in a minute what may have taken years to build. But the destruction clears the way for something else to be created. Tornado dreams warn that sudden, powerful, change is at hand, and that the best recourse is to stop struggling against it, take cover, and let yourself move forward. Even Dorothy eventually made it home, in one piece, with a new understanding and wisdom to guide her.
