Austin and Ally

Disney Channel has another hit on their hands- Austin and Ally. Surrounding the budding musical careers of two teens, it's sure to be well- received by music lovers and non- music lovers alike.

The series began with an interesting situation. Austin is an outgoing, fun- loving, aspiring singer, whose close friend Ally is a talented but serious singer/songwriter. While Austin loves to sing and perform, Ally has a severe case of stage fright that prohibits her from singing in front of others. She prefers to write songs, and is very good at it. Austin, loving one of her songs and deciding it would sound great, decides no only to sing it, but create a video of it with his friend Dez and post it on the internet. Never in his wildest dreams could he have predicted what would happen next- he because an overnight singing sensation! His fame, however, led to a problem- he used the song without Ally's permission, and there was no way to hide that fact.
Ally, convinced by a friend to take credit for her work, eventually does so.

This puts Austin in a quandary, because he wants to continue building his fame. To that end, he convinces Ally to keep writing for him, and their singer/ songwriter relationship takes flight. Each episode focuses on the trials and mishaps they face as they try to build Austin's fame and maintain their day to day lives as high-schoolers. Ally, who eventually overcomes her stage fright, still prefers to be in the background and is the more serious side of the duo, often working with Austin's manager Trish to get or keep Austin out of trouble. Also a part of the group is Austin's best friend Dez, who tends to encourage Austin to get into some of the troublesome situations that he needs help fixing.

When the show was initially brought to my attention, I confess- I didn't think it would be very good. However, I am pleased to say that I was pleasantly surprised- it's quite entertaining, and thus far I haven't seen anything that raises red flags in terms of their behavior or actions on screen. My oldest loves it- she thinks it's one of the best shows currently on TV. There are many moments where I get a good chuckle, and I enjoy the musical numbers performed during the show.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out, do so at your earliest convenience- you won't be disappointed!
