My paranormal research group (Paranormal Research Group of Northeast Missouri) has started to receive an increased number of calls asking for help with physical assaults from paranormal entities. This isn't something that our group is able to help with other than to make suggestions and referrals. Interestingly, it seems the Catholic Church has also been receiving an increasing number of calls about negative paranormal entities.

The Archdiocese of Milan (the second largest city in Italy), has found it necessary to set up “an exorcist hotline.” According to Monsignor Angelo Mascheroni, the diocese’s chief exorcist since 1995, over the past 15 years the number of exorcists necessary to respond to requests for help has doubled.

A switchboard is now in operation Monday to Friday from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. for people in need of an exorcist. The switchboard will connect them to the closest priest in the vicinity.

Monsignor Mascheroni said that the number of exorcists has increased from six to twelve relieving some of the pressure on the priests and allowing them to offer more than a mere blessing. Mascheroni knew of one exorcist attempting to help up to 120 people a day.

Monsignor Angelo Mascheroni was ordained in June of 1952. He was consecrated bishop in 1990, and resigned from that office in 2005 due to age limit restrictions.

Mascheroni believes that many of the calls aren’t demon related, but concern disobedient teenagers. He said, “The real diabolical phenomena, at least in my experience, are very rare.” It is more often that mental and psychiatric disorders are responsible for “unusual behavior.”

He is concerned about “vulnerable people” falling under the influence of charlatans demanding money. The priests give their time and help for free. “It couldn’t be any other way,” said Mascheroni.

Another priest interviewed about his views on demonic possession, Father Gabriele Amorth, “has cleansed tens of thousands of demonic possessions” through his work as an exorcist. He was the founder of the International Association of Exorcists in 1990; and, president until his retired at 75 in 2000. Father Amorth has some interesting views on Ouija boards, demons, Harry Potter and yoga. Amorth is the author of two books about his work as an exorcist.

He believes that “the Devil is at work inside the Vatican” as evidence by the “sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church.” He elaborates that the Vatican’s attempt to keep the deaths of Swiss Guard Commander Alois Estermann, his wife, and Corporal Cedric Tornay hidden in 1998 is because of the Devil’s influence on the Roman Catholic Church.
