Are you a topper or a finisher? I am both. I’m comfortable with piecing AND machine quilting my quilts. I know a large number of quilters who make tops all the time, but because lack of machine quilting skill and / or budgetary restraints these tops languish in the cupboard, unfinished.
With the advent of commercial quilters those who don’t wish to quilt their quilts don’t have to. You can organise to deliver your quilt top to a commercial quilter who will provide in the cost the batting and the backing fabric. So easy – but sometimes a little more expensive than we can afford.
The invention and introduction of small machine quilting units for domestic quilting as seen more and more quilters taking that giant leap of faith and learning to machine quilt their quilts. Either using domestic sewing machines or these new mini long arm quilting machines, the quilter is gaining lots of skill and satisfaction from completing her quilt from “womb to tomb”, so to speak!
There is a flood of machine quilting tutorials on the web and I’ve taken some time to bring to you the ones I think are worth looking at. I hope something here sparks off some quilters to have a go at quilting for yourselves. Enjoy!
