Book App Trailer - Where To Begin

Now that you have your book app in the app store, itís time to think about advertising the app. One of the best ways to market your app is to create a book app trailer. Book app trailers are much like movie trailers, giving the viewer a peak at whatís inside the book app.

Most of my book app developer tutorials are for Kwik and Corona SDK. So Iím assuming you probably have these two programs, along with Xcode. So you can use the Corona simulator for playback of your app and you can also playback your app on your device.

What we need is a program that can capture your playback in good quality. For recording playback from your device, there are several options. I canít cover them all here. What I can do is pass on what Iíve learned while creating my first book app trailer.

One option I tested is a nice program called Reflector by Squirrels LLC. This program will use AirPlay to display or mirror your app from your device onto your Mac desktop. It can also record the playback. However, it is limited to a resolution of 1280 x 720. So it cannot record the retina display at the full HD resolution of 2048 x 1536. However, most trailers display the app within the iPad device giving the impression that you are seeing the device at work. So the 1280 x 720 resolution will be enough.

Once you have the simulation recorded, you can use AppleR iMovieR to edit the video further. You will want to trim the video a little to remove the sections before and after the clips you wish to use in your trailer. Another iMovie feature that I really like are the built-in transitions that you can put between video clips, background music and sound effects, maps, backgrounds and animatics.

With all of these features, you can create a nice simple trailer. However, I also wanted to have special title effects such as you see in movie trailers. For example, you commonly see the words ďIn Movie Theaters SoonĒ. With the iMovieís Title Styles you can add these built-in title effects. Finally, you can preview your work at full screen mode which will give you an idea of what it will look like on YouTube. Once you are ready you can publish your trailer to YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo from within iMovie.

Another software option is AdobeR After EffectsR, which has more features. You also have more control over every elements in the trailer from the clips to sound effects. For example, After Effects comes with three built-in particle systems which you can use to create your own custom title styles.
