Baldr Force EXE

Baldr Force EXE is a four episode OVA series based on the Baldr Force 2D action-shooter game; in Japan, the title of the OVA series is Baldr Force EXE Resolution.

This OVA has a concept called the Wired World, which is world that can only be accessed by the mind after a person is plugged into the network. In the Wired World, users can create their own virtual paradise and spend time there instead of spending time in the real world. Unfortunately, there are risks associated with the Wired World. If someone is killed in the Wired World, they will also die in the real world.

The main character is Toru Soma, who is a member of the hacking group Steppenwolf. When the group decides to disband, they decide to try to do one final major hack before calling it quits. They decide to break into the computers of FLAK, a military organization in charge of protecting the Wired World. Unfortunately, the leader of Steppenwolf is killed during the attempt, and the other members of the group are arrested by FLAK.

When FLAK interrogates Toru, he is given a choice: he can either work for FLAK or serve jail time for his crime. Toru decides to work for FLAK, in the hopes that he can find the person who killed the leader of Steppenwolf and avenge his death. The series follows Toru and what he goes through.

The animation in Baldr Force EXE utilizes a combination of traditional animation and computer graphics. The traditional animation actually looks pretty good in Baldr Force EXE; unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the computer graphics. The CG is used primarily for the mecha, but the mecha looks rather blocky and looks like it moves rather awkwardly. Overall, I didn't think the traditional animation and the computer graphics complemented each other very well. Personally, I think the mecha would have looked a lot better if it had been animated with traditional animation instead.

As of this writing, Baldr Force EXE is available for viewing on the Crackle service, and the service has given the OVA a rating of TV-MA. In the first episode, there are some shots of exploding heads with blood spurting out, so it may have been given the TV-MA rating due to violence and blood.

Since Crackle has given Baldr Force EXE this rating, I can only truly recommend it to anime viewers who are 18 years of age and older.
