Sewing Lesson - How to Make Cloth Napkins

Like many others, I am concerned about the environment and have been trying to reduce the amount of paper products that we use in our home. A few years ago, we started using cloth napkins instead of paper napkins and it has been a nice change. Not only do I feel like we are contributing less to a landfill but cloth napkins are actually much nicer to use than paper. They are durable, absorbent and feel nicer than paper napkins.
Cloth napkins are readily available in many stores and the quality and price vary widely. I have some that have serged edges, which look nice, but they have a tendency to curl. Others were not cut squarely when they were made and after a few washings, they began to lose their shape.
I finally decided to just start making them myself. Cloth napkins are very easy to make. You can not only save money, but you can use fun fabric prints and colors that coordinate better with your kitchen and dining room decor

This project will help you practice sewing double fold hems and it will also reinforce the straight seam stitching and pressing skills that you have learned in previous lessons.

Project Supplies:

Preparing Your Fabric

Pre-wash and press the fabric flat before beginning.

Cutting Instructions

Napkins vary in size from 14 inches to 18 inches. Cut your fabric into squares of the desired size plus one inch for hemming. Make sure that you cut on the grain of the fabric so that they will not distort with use.
