The Devoured Earth by Sean Williams

In the final entry in the Books of the Cataclysm by Sean Williams it looks as if the powerful god Yod is finally about to break free from his imprisonment in the Void Beneath. Shilly and the mankins race to the top of the mountains hoping to keep him from breaking free and bringing destruction to their world. Close behind is Sal and his father, along with an uneasy alliance of Sky Wardens, Panic, and foresters. What they find on top of the mountain besides the taint of Yod seeping into their world surprises them. An abandoned town full of bodies killed by the agents of Yod.

The Ice Eaters were thought to exist only legend and stories. But they are real and hiding from Yod in the caverns below their town. As a sworn duty, they protect the goddess and will thwart any effort to rise her from her tomb, killing any who try to disturb her. Shilly, Sal and everyone else trying to contain Yod must find a way to raise the Goddess from her tomb, despite the protection of the Ice Eaters, and save the world.

My Recommendation
The Devoured Earth by Sean Williams is a satisfying conclusion to The Books of the Cataclysm. While this volume didn't have the same fantastical feel as the books, all the story lines wrap up well and I especially enjoyed seeing Shilly's tale come to a close.
I think this is the weakest of the four books, but is still a great read. The Books of the Cataclysm have become one of my favorites and I highly recommend the entire series.
