In my position as Editor of the Quilting site on Bellaonline – the voice of women, I am very fortunate that I occasionally receive complimentary publications to review for my readers. At times I come across some little gems of quilt books and City Blocks is one such publication. This book is published by the highly respected publishing house Leisure Arts and is authored by Nancy Rink. The book is titled City Blocks – 10 Quilt Designs by Nancy Rink.
Nancy Rink has been quilting and designing great quilts for some time and has managed to squeeze 10 of her best designs into this publication City Blocks. By the way, Nancy has a wonderful array of quilt designs to her name and I thoroughly recommend you spend a little time on her website.
City Blocks is all about modern quilts and there’s a large variety of patchwork genres on show in this book. Not only some very fancy machine piecing, but some super duper appliqué patterns as well. Nancy has taken some ordinary blocks patterns and added her own modern twist which has turned these quilt designs in to something special.
As mentioned before, there are 10 quilt patterns, some full sized quilts, others suitable for wall hangings, table toppers and the like. Very modern fabrics are used in Nancy’s quilts and they take on a very cosmopolitan look about them. One can easily imagine any of these quilts draped over a settee in a city apartment, anywhere in the world.
Nancy loves colour, that’s pretty obvious when you flick through her photographs. A great deal of thought has been put into the writing of the instructions for these quilts. Nancy leaves no ambiguous statements, every instruction is followed either by a graphic or descriptions that are easy to understand and put into practice.
As with most Leisure Arts publications, this book has an extensive chapter on general instructions for making and finishing quilts. I really like this quilt book. It would make a fabulous gift for the newbie quilter, or the more experienced needleworker.
