Failing High School Dream Interpretation

“Throughout my real life school career, I never experienced any academic problems and even went on to earn a post-graduate degree. Yet, during a particularly tense time of my life, I had a recurring dream that my high school guidance counselor was informing me that I could not graduate because I had skipped my social studies class so often that I was behind in all of my assignments.

I felt so panicked to learn that I wouldn’t be able to graduate. I had no idea that there was something wrong with my curriculum, and I recall feeling shocked and desperate. He finally relented and said I could “make up” the class during the coming summer. This dream continued for weeks.” (L.P.)

When one is a student in school, dreaming about our day-to-day school experiences is typical. But when a dreamer is beyond school years, the school symbol becomes a metaphor for life learning. Let’s look at the dream symbols in this dream:

The Dream Symbols
School. Consider your waking life learning place or institution. If you are not enrolled in school, then a school represents your life.
High school. High school symbolizes higher learning but not an advanced level such as college or graduation school. In other words, your life learning has progressed beyond the elementary lessons and even middle school grade levels but has not graduated yet onto the higher learning levels.
Skipping class. Avoiding a particular subject of life.
Social studies. Social studies as a subject involves social, socializing, community areas of life.
Not graduating Still needing more education or practice. Not ready for advancement in an area of life or in spiritual progression.
School guidance counselor. Represents a spiritual being who is counseling the dreamer along his life path.
Being allowed to make up skipped classes. The dreamer is being given a second chance, time to review or restudy.
Summer. A time of productivity, knowledge, maturity. Often represents the hope and patience needed before reaping harvest.

The Dream Interpretation
School is a metaphor in this dream for life and life lessons. It appears that this dreamer is avoiding an important area of life: social studies. The dreamer skipped social studies class which means she has avoided being around others and learning about relationships, and this prevents her from graduating onto higher spiritual lessons (college).

Her panic and desperation in not being able to graduate indicates her desire for higher learning. Her guidance counselor relents and allows her to graduate as long as she takes social studies during the summer, and this indicates that her higher life lessons will continue. She is being given a second chance to get in her “social studies” during her “summer” season of life which is when she is more mature.

Dream Therapy
People don’t often recognize that part of life’s purpose is to learn and experience all we can before we return from whence we came. Life presents us with necessary opportunities but we often avoid them for one reason or another. In this dreamer’s case, she began to withdraw from her social circles, including friends, church and volunteer groups during her younger days. She often felt guilty about cocooning all to herself as a nagging feeling urged her to mix with other people. There were missed opportunities to befriend the lonely, participate in charitable causes or just experience different global cultures.

Although in a spiritual sense, she has been allowed to graduate to higher life lessons, she still needs to do some remedial work in the social studies area of her life. I encouraged this dreamer that even though it might seem too late to get involved during her later years, she is still in her summer—and potentially very productive—season of life with a chance to “make up” for lost time and lost lessons.
