Blanket Stitch Applique Tutorial

The process of blanket stitching around an applique is similar, but instead of stitching and covering an outside edge, you will be stitching around the edge of just the applique and into the background material to keep the applique in place.
Place your applique in the desired location on the base fabric and pin in place, if necessary. Thread your needle with thread and and knot the end.

Bring the needle up from underneath the fabric close to the edge of the applique.

Insert the needle down into the fabric the desired distance from the edge.

Bring the needle up again from underneath at the edge of the applique in the same spot as the initial stitch. Hold the floss above and away from the stitch.

Pull floss up so that it rests against the fabric. The working end of the floss should appear to be coming out just below the loop.

To form the next stitch, insert the needle down through the applique and then back up through the background fabric. Hold the floss so that it forms a loop and pass the the needle through it (see photo). Snug up the floss so that it lies smoothly against the fabric.

Continue stitching along the edge as desired and secure the end to finish. If you are stitching all the way around an applique, finish your stitching by inserting the needle into the hole where you first started to form the final top bar and then knot the end.
