Inglorious Basterds

In the midst of the Nazi’s occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus and her Jewish family are being hidden by a local dairy farmer and his family. When they’re discovered by Colonel Hans Landa, the family is executed except for Shosanna who is able to escape. A few years later, she runs a local cinema where a young German officer becomes smitten with her and arranges for Joseph Goebbels next film project to premier at her theater where the four top Nazi officials, including Hitler himself, will be attending. While Shosanna has more than “lights, camera, action” planned for the attendees, a U.S. military group are planning an explosive (literally) event themselves. Led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the “Basterds” as have made a name for themselves among the German elite for some of their “hair raising” schemes. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “Inglorious Basterds”.

· At the very beginning of the movie, the rear view of Julia shows her pulling and smoothing a white sheet on the clothesline. It cuts to a closer rear view and there is a clothespin holding the sheet on the line that wasn’t there before. (She then takes the clothespin off before she notices the motorcycles and vehicle coming.)

· Aldo Raine is pacing in front of the soldiers, talking to them about the mission. In the rear view, when he says “we’re going to be doing one thing…”, he’s near the left end (his right) of the formation. It cuts to a front view of Aldo and then a rear/side view when he says “…killing Nazis” and he’s at the opposite end of the formation, in front of the first two on the right (his left).

· Aldo Raine is trying to get German Sergeant Rachtmann to tell him about the artillery in the orchard. The Sergeant’s service medal is over his left breast pocket. When Aldo calls Donny to “oblige him”, the close-up view of the Sergeant shows the medal is over his right breast pocket. It cuts to a quick side view of him and Aldo and it’s back over the left pocket. It’s over the right pocket in the next close-up.

· Shosanna is taking down the letters on the marquee. The “C”, “N” and “A” are down when Fredrick Zoller starts talking to her. It cuts to an overhead view of Zoller when he says “I always prefer Linder to Chaplin” and the letters are together on the canvas. Shosanna tosses down another letter and it cuts back to the overhead view. The letters are now spread apart; the “A” is on the left side of the canvas and an “L” is towards the right. It cuts back to Shosanna and then the overhead view which now shows the “A” is next to the “C” and the “L” is gone. The letters continue to change with each overhead view.

· Lieutenant Hicox and his men are in the bar with Bridget von Hammersmark. When they are playing the card game, Hicox’s card has “Brigitte Horney” written on it and it originally on his forehead with the name written top to bottom. But after Major Hellstrom guesses his card (King Kong) and Bridget and Lieutenant Hicox toast him, the close-up shows the name on Hicox’s card is displayed bottom to top. It’s back in its original top to bottom position when he takes the card off.

· Colonel Hans Landa has Aldo and Utivich tied at the table. The front view of Landa when he’s telling them to get someone on the radio, shows both of his arms are on the table. (His right arm is in front of the wine glass and his left arm beside it.) It cuts to a right side view of Landa when Aldo says “you know where I’m from” and both of Landa’s arms are off the table and by his side. (His right hand is in his lap and his left hand is on the edge of the table.)

“Inglorious Basterds” (2009) stars Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger and Daniel Bruhl. It runs 153 minutes and is rated R for strong graphic violence, language and brief sexuality.
