Changing Backgrounds in ScreenFlow

In this ScreenFlowR tutorial, we will complete the marketing video short by adding the second sound effect file and fade in the blue background. These design elements will appear on the screen at the 3 second spot on the timeline.

The fade in background effect will be created by the fade out animation of the white gradient background that has been visible on the screen thus far. At this point, the short can be used as a beginning for educational or marketing videos.

Letís import and position the second audio file.

  1. Open ScreenFlow and close the Configure Recording window.

  2. From the ScreenFlow Menubar, click File - Open. Open the .screenflow project file.

  3. We want the audio file to play at the 3 second point on the Timeline. Place the Scrubber at this position and click Insert - Choose to import the audio file. Because the first audio is shorter than 3 seconds, we have room on the same audio track for this second audio. You will see the second audio added to the same audio track at the 3 second point.

  4. Now we can add the blue background layer that will be revealed as the white gradient background fades out. Place the Scrubber at the 3 second position again and import the background jpg file, which will appear on a new track at the top of the stack. Drag the track to the bottom and under the white gradient background track. Now drag the right edge of the track to the 5 second point on the Timeline, which is the end of the video.

  5. The white background will fade out over 1 second beginning at the 3 second point on the Timeline. Select the white background track and place the Scrubber at the 3 second point.

  6. Click the Video tab to open the Video Properties pane. Click the Add Video Action button. The new Action rectangle will appear on the track. Move the rectangle so that the beginning of the action is at the 3 second point.

  7. We want the fade out animation to last 1 second. Drag the right edge of the Action rectangle to the 4 second point on the Timeline.

  8. The Opacity of the track is already set to 100% for the beginning of the animation. Move the Scrubber to the 4 second point on the Timeline and reduce the Opacity to 0% in the Video Properties pane.

At this point our video intro is complete and ready to be added to the front or end of an instructional or marketing video. Letís save it in the default ScreenFlow format. We will begin each new video project by first making a copy of this file to use as the beginning of the project.
